Skype launches Arabic-language website
Skype has launched an Arabic version of its website as it continues to ramp up its presence in the Middle East.
The translated website is intended to make it easier for Arabic speakers to download the Skype application, and use its services, which include free voice and video calls to other Skype users, file sharing and instant messaging.
Users can also make cheap calls to non-Skype users mobile phones and landlines.
The service is blocked in many Gulf countries, including Oman and the UAE, to protect the profits of government-owned telcos, although the service is available in Bahrain, where Skype is planning to open its first Middle East office.
"At this special time of year, we are delighted to give Arabic speaking people the opportunity to connect in more meaningful ways without having to worry about time, distance or cost," said Rouzbeh H. Pasha, head of emerging markets at Skype.
