MECOM gathers momentum with broad based support from telecommunications sector

Ericsson, Nortel, HP and Alcatel confirm participation at international telecoms exhibition


15 November 2006Mecom, international telecom and IT communications event, is gathering momentum with broad industry support from leading market players. The event will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from April 22 to April 25, 2007 under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi & Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.


Etisalat, new telecommunications company du, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in the UAE have all taken Platinum event sponsorships for the international telecom exhibition.


Mohammed Nasser Al Ghanim of the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said, "We are delighted to extend our full support to MECOM, which we believe will become a major industry showcase combined with a strong conference programme that will stimulate discussion concerning best practices in all areas of telecommunications."


Mohammed Khalfan Al Qamzi, the Chief Executive Officer Of Etisalat expressed his support, stating, "It gives me great pleasure to confirm Emirates Telecommunications Company’s (Etisalat) support of MECOM 2007 and its participation in the trade fair and the MECOM Congress."


Osman Sultan, Chief Executive Officer of du (Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company) said, “It is my privilege and pleasure to confirm that Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company – du – will be an integral part of MECOM 2007."


The show will host a number of international pavilions from around the world. Leading international companies such as Alcatel, Nortel, Juniper Networks and Hewlett Packard have already booked significant exhibit spaces at MECOM as well as Motorola and Ericsson who have also taken Gold event sponsorships.


Ziad Karam, Manager Market Communications for Ericsson Middle East said “We believe that MECOM will be a significant regional event for the telecoms sector and are delighted to take on Gold Sponsorship. Ericsson will also have a major exhibition stand display and an active role in the conference programme, reflecting our support for this event.”


MECOM will be two events combined into one major telecoms and IT coms showcase. Apart from the exhibition, leading providers of communications products and services will take part in a four day trade fair that will be promoted to visitors across the whole of the Middle East, Africa, The Indian Sub-Continent and the Caspian and Black Sea States.


Heads of regional regulatory authorities and telecoms operators will be invited to attend the prestigious MECOM conference where issues vital to the whole industry such as Regulations, Standards, Pricing, Cooperation and Security will be discussed. The MECOM Conference will also cover the latest developments, issues, products and opportunities in the communications sector such as Wireless, Satellite, 3G, Internet & Broadband, VOIP and Next Generation Networks.

    Facebook claims 2m active advertisers

    Facebook now claims 2m active advertisers - a one-third increase from July last year, when the figure stood at 1.5m - and most of the growth is happening in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

    Microsoft launches gold editions of flagship smartphones in UAE

    Microsoft Devices this week announced the availability of gold-coloured editions of its Lumia 830 and 930 smartphones in UAE.

    The blinged-up Lumia 830 will be priced at AED1,349, and the Lumia 930 at AED1,799. Both will be available in Axiom stores across the UAE, starting this week.

    The gold editions are to be launched only in select markets, including the Middle East.

    Egypt's Global Telecom says 2014 losses narrowed by 84 percent-statement

    CAIRO, Feb 25 ( Reuters ) - Global Telecom , the Egypt-based group formerly called Orascom Telecom, reported a 2014 loss of 3.2 billion Egyptian pounds ($419.40 million), the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

    Global Telecom, which is 51.9 percent owned by Russia's Vimpelcom , posted a loss of 20 billion Egyptian pounds in the previous year.
