Thuraya Unveiled its Innovative Maritime Solution - SF2500™- at CommunicAsia 2012

Thuraya Telecommunications Company unveiled at CommunicAsia 2012 in Singapore its SF2500™ maritime satellite voice terminal, developed jointly with partner Addvalue Communications Pte Ltd.

 
Thuraya is using its existing success in providing satellite communications to more than 140 countries around the globe to diversify into selected vertical sectors. Having sold over 600,000 handsets worldwide, the move is another significant step for Thuraya as it continues to expand its marine product line
 
SF2500™ is the latest offering available to end-users under the recently created Thuraya MarineComms brand, which was launched to provide dedicated support for the marine market and enables Thuraya’s community of distributors and channel partners to provide training and support for marine end-users. The Indonesian Fisherman Association is already an early adopter of the SF2500™ terminal, and Thuraya expects the product’s reliability and value to rapidly attract other global marine end-users.

    Operators look to tablet devices to drive 4G migration and usage

    3 UK in 4G spectrum pooling talks with EE

    3 UK, the smallest mobile network operator in the UK, has had talks with EE about pooling the two companies’ respective 800MHz assets, revealed chief executive David Dyson (pictured) in a briefing this week.

    In the UK’s 4G auction, which was completed in February, 3 UK and EE each acquired 2x5MHz in the 800MHz frequency band. The two have talked about combining this spectrum, according to several reports of the briefing.

    Android & iOS generated 90% of smartphone shipments in Q1

    Android and iOS together accounted for 92 per cent of global smartphone shipments during Q1 2013, as the two leading operating systems further strengthened their grip on the market, according to IDC.

    In Q1 2012, the two OS had a combined market share of 82 per cent, said the research firm.
    Behind the two leaders, Microsoft’s Windows Phone overtook BlackBerry into third place – a first – with the largest year-on-year gain among the leading operating systems.

    3G launch delay prompts questions in Algeria

    Algerians are asking many questions about the country's delay in launching high-speed 3G mobile telecommunication, which was scheduled to take place in the first quarter of this year.
    Post and ICT Minister Moussa Benhamadi attributed the delay primarily to the situation regarding Djezzy, which is due to be purchased by the state.

    Saudi mobile charges among the highest worldwide

    Saudi mobile call charges are among the highest in the world, at around 35 halalas a minute compared to the world average of seven halalas a minute, according to surveys conducted by the Saudi Consumer Protection Association (CPA).

    In statement, the CPA said that these costs are for all communication services, including the Internet. The CPA said it conducted the surveys after the decision was taken to stop free international roaming calls for subscribers.

    Wataniya names new CEO

    DOHA: Ooredoo subsidiary Wataniya Telecom's current Deputy CEO Abdulaziz Fakhroo has been appointed as CEO for Wataniya Telecom, replacing Dr Bassam Hannoun who has resigned for personal reasons. Ooredoo Group Chairman Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Thani said:

    AlcaLu names former Vodafone exec as new CEO

    Troubled network vendor Alcatel-Lucent has announced that former Vodafone exec Michel Combes will become its new CEO from April 1. Combes will replace Ben Verwaayen, who announced his resignation earlier this month after failing to deliver a turnaround at the company.
    Combes, 51, recently spent four years (2008-2012) as CEO of Vodafone Europe. He had been named to take over as chief executive of Vivendi’s SFR last year, France’s second-biggest mobile operator, but the appointment was aborted after a management shake-up at the parent company.
