Inmarsat announces Satcom as GX Aviation distributor

Satellite communications specialist Inmarsat yesterday announced it will be working with Satcom Direct, provider of satellite voice, fax, datalink and Internet communications solutions, to take its GX Aviation proposition to the business aviation market.

China set to favour TD-LTE in 4G licence issue

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is set to issue licences for TD-LTE 4G technology to the country’s three main mobile operators – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom – in a move that will bolster the position of the technology in the world’s most populous market.
According to Marbridge Daily, while operators will be able to build networks using the more widely used LTE FDD, in order to do so they will need to apply to MIIT for a separate licence – adding an additional layer of complexity to the process.

Operators urged to adjust business model in OTT battle

Etisalat Nigeria signs USD1.2bn loan facility

Abu Dhabi: The Nigerian operation of the UAE telecommunication services operator, Etisalat, has signed a $1.2 billion (Dh4.4 billion) equivalent medium-term syndicated loan facility, Etisalat said on Monday.

In a mandatory filing to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, Etisalat said the Nigeria operation planned to use the proceeds to “refinance the existing commercial medium-term debt of $650 million and continue its network rollout across Nigeria.”

VimpelCom talks to sell Djezzy to Algerian govt end in failure

CAIRO- ( Dow Jones) Talks between Russian telecommunications company VimpelCom Ltd. (VIP) and the Algerian government regarding the government's potential purchase of Algeria's biggest mobile operator Djezzy have ended in failure, two officials close to the matter told Dow Jones Newswires.

One official said the talks were halted after the two sides met in Paris two weeks ago to discuss VimpelCom's sale of a majority stake in Djezzy, which is part of VimpelCom-controlled Orascom Telecom Holding SAE (ORTE.CI).

Wataniya names new CEO

AlcaLu names former Vodafone exec as new CEO

Troubled network vendor Alcatel-Lucent has announced that former Vodafone exec Michel Combes will become its new CEO from April 1. Combes will replace Ben Verwaayen, who announced his resignation earlier this month after failing to deliver a turnaround at the company.
Combes, 51, recently spent four years (2008-2012) as CEO of Vodafone Europe. He had been named to take over as chief executive of Vivendi’s SFR last year, France’s second-biggest mobile operator, but the appointment was aborted after a management shake-up at the parent company.
